Pain Recovery Wellness Program
Some patients may be good candidates for our Pain Recovery Wellness Program, an interdisciplinary program for those where pain and/or opioids are virtually controlling their lives. Our team is comprised of our in house Board certified physicians and nationally certified Rehabilitation Counselor/Vocational Evaluator and Health Coach. Our program takes a biopsychosocial approach to Pain. We understand that pain is not imagined, but rather how people experience pain is influenced by mood, anxiety and the environment. Our goal is to restore the patient’s physical and emotional functioning and improve quality of life.
Opioid Weaning: Although opioids are very effective for acute conditions, they are central nervous system depressants. Although they soothe people who are in distress, functioning is not always improved when taking opioids long term. By addressing the psychology of a patient’s pain we are able to look at opioid weaning. It has to be a whole body treatment approach.
Mind Body: Historically, we have thought that pain in general was correlated to the nature and/or severity of an injury or anatomical issue. Now it has become clear that what’s going on in your brain matters too. In comparing patients with the same MRI results showing the same back injury, some may experience terrible chronic pain while others report no pain at all. People who are under stress or prone to depression or anxiety tend to suffer more. When looking at the Mind Body Connection we are able to help patients identify the sources of their depression, anxiety or stress that may be contributing to their pain and assist them in improving their life coping skills. This greatly assists in returning patients to functional lifestyles.
Lifestyle: Studies comparing exercise to no exercise for chronic back pain are consistently clear. Physical activity can relieve pain while being inactive can delay a person’s recovery. Exercise is helpful in that it can increase muscle strength, improve flexibility and range of motion, boost blood flow to soft tissues, promoting healing and reducing stiffness. We slowly introduce patients back to physical activities that they enjoy. We look at the patient’s home life, overall health, financial responsibilities vocational and mental abilities and how these might be affecting the healing process. Diet and overall wellness are also factored into the patient’s chronic pain recovery program. When psychosocial concerns are not addressed, it delays recovery and increases length, efficacy and costs of pain management treatment. It has to be a whole body treatment approach.
